Cornwall Council is supporting a celebrity call to pick up dog poo.
TV personality Ben Fogle, The Dog’s Trust and Keep Britain Tidy are all calling for pooch owners to ‘bag it and bin it’ in an initiative called The Big Scoop on Friday.
All around the UK there will be events promoting scooping poop, including in Newquay, Bude and Penzance.
“Sadly dog fouling is a problem across the whole country and it is very frustrating that a few irresponsible dog owners give the vast majority a bad name.
“Not only is dog waste, if ignored, unsightly but it can pose serious health risks to our young children,” said Geoff Brown, Cornwall Council cabinet member for Homes and Communities.
“Come on Cornwall, let’s all work together and make our county the first in Britain to be dog poo free!”
The council has produced a film to raise awareness of the issue in which children from primary schools across Cornwall have illustrated that dog fouling is anti-social – in the quirky way that only children can.
It features pupils from Treverbyn Academy in St Austell, The Bishops CE Primary School in Newquay and St Breock Primary School Wadebridge.
The council is increasing the number of officers working with communities to issue Fixed Penalty Notices to offenders.
It is also in the process of training employees of its waste contractor Cory to undertake a similar role, as well as police officers.

As an extra incentive to encourage dog owners to pick up after their dog, vouchers are available from www.cornwall.gov.uk/dogfouling to get 10 per cent off dog poo bags on sale at the council’s One Stop Shops.
